Capitol Music Group (CMG) and Capitol Christian Music Group (Capitol CMG) have made an exciting announcement regarding the relaunch of the renowned label Tamla Records. As a mainstream imprint, Tamla Records will now focus on positive hip-hop and R&B music, with EJ Gaines, the current SVP of Marketing for Capitol CMG, leading the label’s roster of artists and staff.
Tamla Records holds a significant place in music history, originally founded by the visionary Berry Gordy nearly 65 years ago. Berry Gordy later changed the label’s name to the iconic Motown Records. Since its inception, Tamla Records has served as a bridge from faith-based music to the mainstream, and its artist roster boasts legendary names such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Smokey Robinson & The Miracles.
Thomas “Tillie” Mann, a well-established mix engineer and long-time collaborator with Quality Control, has been revealed as the initial partner to join the reinvigorated Tamla imprint. Additionally, his label, Encouragement Music, will also be involved in this exciting venture. Tillie Mann has worked with notable artists like Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, Drake, and Migos.
The Co-Presidents of Capitol CMG, Brad O’Donnell and Hudson Plachy, expressed their excitement about relaunching the Tamla imprint while honoring the legacy of Mr. Gordy. They believe that Tillie Mann and Encouragement Music are the perfect partners for this venture. EJ Gaines, a seasoned executive, will oversee Tamla along with the support of the Capitol CMG staff, and they express their gratitude to Michelle Jubelirer and Capitol for their belief in this new endeavor.
The Tamla roster of artists will receive support from Capitol Records, highlighting the parent company’s commitment to innovation across all genres and addressing the industry’s inequities for BIPOC creatives and executives.
Chair & CEO of Capitol Music Group, Michelle Jubelirer, emphasizes that the relaunch of Tamla expands the company’s dedication to hip-hop and R&B music and shows support for the artists, label partners, and creative executives who have joined Capitol Music Group in recent months.
EJ Gaines, the head of Tamla Records, is honored to continue the label’s rich legacy. His objective is to produce revolutionary mainstream music that seamlessly blends elements of faith and cultural progression, setting a new standard in the industry. EJ expresses his gratitude to Hudson, Brad, and Michelle for entrusting him with this responsibility.
